Snow storm in the Netherlands for the first time in over ten years | NOW

On the Houtribdijk, between Enkhuizen and Lelystad, an average wind force 8 was measured for an hour on Saturday between 23:00 and midnight in combination with snowfall. With that, according to Weer.nl officially speaking of a snowstorm in the Netherlands. The last time that happened was in January 2010.

Before an official snowstorm, a KNMI station must have an average wind of at least 8 Beaufort for an hour. This stormy wind must accompany snowfall or drifting snow. That is now the case with the IJsselmeer.

There is also snowdrift in other places where no 8 Beaufort has been measured. There may be a snow storm in more places in the northwestern coastal area tonight.

It also snows all day on Sunday and that snowfall continues to be accompanied by a lot of wind. The snowfall will decrease on Sunday evening. In the night to Monday the wind also decreases in strength and follows a week of cold winter weather. There is even a chance of a cold snap.

The last heavy snowstorm dates back to 1985 when it snowed on January 8 and 9 in a stormy wind. The heaviest and most disruptive blizzard was that of February 14, 1979. Then the blizzard lasted ninety hours and snow dunes of three to six meters were formed. Only on January 9, 2010 there was an official snowstorm in Hoek van Holland, Lauwersoog, Schiermonnikoog and above the IJsselmeer.

According to Weer.nl, it is no coincidence that the last official snow storm took place more than 10 years ago. The climate is heating up and with that snow and winter weather in general are becoming increasingly rare. In the last century, a snowstorm occurred on average once every 5 years.
