Snow Squall Causes Dangerous Conditions for Drivers on East Coast: What to Know

Most of the East Coast of the United States has experienced a weekend with thermal sensations below freezing point that in the northern area was accompanied by snow, which when it falls in the form of a ‘squall’ (snow squall, in English ) poses dangerous conditions for drivers.

What is a snow ‘squall’?

The biggest risk is that they reduce visibility in the areas they pass through from one moment to the next. Furthermore, after their passage they freeze the streets and highways in a matter of minutes, creating conditions for vehicle accidents to occur.

They normally occur when strong cold fronts are generated that bring winds from the Arctic.

Recommendation from authorities: If you will pass through an area where there will be a snow squall, consider taking an alternate route or traveling at another time. If you find yourself in one, slow down and turn on your lights.

“A road is not a safe place during a snow squall event,” the NWS says.

The NWS released two photos that were taken 4 minutes apart to demonstrate the effect a snow squall can have on a road.

Areas in New York affected by ‘snow squalls’

The NWS indicated this Sunday, January 14, that snow squalls are moving quickly and will move this afternoon.

“Highest chance of having impactful snow flurries in the northern and interior sections. These will be located! Only light rain and snow may occur in some areas, especially closer to the coast,” the NWS said on the X social network.

The map below shows the times at which snow flurries are expected to pass through the area.

  • Snow squalls will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Visibility will be interrupted for half a mile to a quarter of a mile.
  • The areas most affected by snow squalls will be in the north and in the interior of the state.

Affected areas in New Jersey and Pennsylvania

The NWS warned that ‘snow squalls’ will bring a special threat to the northwest of I-95.

“If a blizzard warning is issued for your area, delay travel. If you are driving, find a place to safely exit the road,” the NWS said.

The map below shows the times these conditions will affect the area.

Winter tires or chain installation? What is best for your car? Both are good measures to prepare your car for driving in snow, but both have pros and cons that we will analyze in detail here to guide you in making the best decision. Use any of them when you have to drive on snow or ice.

Winter tires With snow, the first thing our tires will experience will be a loss of grip on the asphalt (less traction). Roads can become real ice rinks.

Winter tires Winter tires have an important reason for being. These are designed to allow greater adherence to the ground and more grip when braking or accelerating when conditions are not ideal. When the temperature drops below 44° Fahrenheit (6° Centigrade) an ordinary tire will lose grip because its material will begin to harden. On the other hand, the compound of a winter tire includes more silica, a material that gives greater grip on slippery terrain.

Winter tires You will physically identify this type of tire by the letters M+S (Mud and Snow), as well as the symbol of a mountain and a snowflake inscribed on the outside of the tire. Its correct installation will be done by your tire dealer or in any professional service workshop.

Winter tires You have a great advantage in terms of safety: lower risk of aquaplaning and reduction in braking distance, the latter being minimized by 49% on snowy roads compared to conventional tires.

Winter tires If your car has ESP (stability system) it will work much better with these tires, since the system needs continuity in grip and this is only offered by winter tires. Despite this, you should not trust yourself and believe that this gives you permission to increase speed or perform risky maneuvers. On the contrary, your movements should be subtle and not impair the operation of the ESP when steering.

Winter tires If your car or SUV has these types of tires, you will no longer need to install chains. Winter tires have to be placed on both axles of the car. In the case of a front-wheel drive car, including them only on the front axle will cause the rear axle to skid. If you only put winter tires on a rear-wheel drive car, the front axle will become completely unbalanced and lose direction when cornering.

Snow chains They have been in use for decades and are an economical option compared to winter tires. Buying four sets of chains will always be cheaper than four tires. It is proven that they also help improve grip on snow or ice and in general when traveling on complicated roads during winter.

Snow chains The installation must be done by oneself and many times in the middle of snowfall and/or cold conditions, that is why it is recommended that in winter time you carry gloves in your car to put them on and that you have the appropriate clothing (coat , hat, boots).

Snow chains Installation time takes around 20 minutes, it will depend on your skill, experience and knowledge to do so. A large percentage of motorists do not know how to place them, so it is advisable to practice several times before doing it.

Snow chains They must be installed on the drive axle; That is, if the car is front-wheel drive on the front wheels, if it is rear-wheel drive on the rear axle and for 4×4 or AWD models on all four wheels.

Snow chains If you install chains and your car has ESP, then you will have to disconnect it, since you will not have constant grip as in the case of winter tires that never lose it. Metal chains are a kind of network made up of metal links that cover the sides of the tires, the treads and, thanks to their tensioners, allow to improve grip and traction on surfaces covered with snow and/or ice, but never compared to winter tires.

Snow chains When the car has chains, you should drive no more than 30 mph (48 km/h), avoiding sudden acceleration and braking. You have to remove them immediately when you have passed the snow or ice area, since it is not good to drive with them on dry pavement; They can break, damaging the tires and the pavement (in many states it is penalized).

Snow covers In Europe there is the option of placing textile chains that are nothing more than canvas covers that cover the tire. Its installation process is easier than steel chains, like putting on a sock, as they are thinner they do not affect the operation of other safety systems such as stability control, traction or ABS. When you get out of the snow you have to remove them, otherwise they will break when they come into contact with the pavement.

Recommendations for driving in snow -Calm those nerves, otherwise you will only make wrong maneuvers. If you think you are not qualified to drive in snow, avoid it. -Smooth driving will always be key, as well as moderate use of the brake and accelerator -If your car starts to skid, always take your foot off the accelerator, do not brake suddenly, gently direct the direction in the opposite direction to which your car is going skidding

Recommendations for driving in snow – If you have ABS brakes, brake gently to avoid activating them. If the wheels lock, take your foot off the brake pedal. -Braking always has to be in a straight line, if you do it with the wheels turned you will only lose control.

Recommendations for driving in snow During this season, always carry a special kit in your car that includes: gloves, a shovel, snow brush, emergency lamp, reflective triangle and a blanket. If you go out on the road a lot, it will be a good idea to include some food (cookies or granola bars) and bottles of water. It is better to be prepared for any eventuality.
