It snows in many places on the Sea of Japan side. Although the snowfall will gradually slow down this afternoon, the 23rd (Saturday), there is a risk that traffic disruptions caused by the heavy snowfall will continue for some time. Even in sunny areas, the temperature does not rise and it is bitterly cold.
It will snow mainly in the morning on the 23rd (Saturday). Widespread snow and rain will occur in the morning and night on the 24th (Sunday).
Strong cold air is flowing in at this time of year. Snow has continued over a wide area since yesterday (22nd), and the plains on the Sea of Japan side of western Japan, including the San’in region, are also covered in snow.
In addition to locally heavy snowfall in Hokuriku that is difficult to remove, snow clouds have also been active along the mountains of Nagano and Gunma prefectures since last night. In Nozawa Onsen Village and Fujiwara, Minakami Town, 40 to 50 centimeters of snow accumulated overnight.
Today, the 23rd (Saturday), there will be snow in many places, especially on the Sea of Japan side. In the afternoon, the snowfall will generally slow down and stop in more places, but there is a risk that traffic disruptions will continue due to the heavy snowfall and icy road surfaces. Please continue to take your time and be cautious.
Tomorrow, the 24th (Sun), the winter-like atmospheric pressure pattern will loosen. However, a trough of atmospheric pressure will pass near Honshu.
In the morning and evening, it snowed and rained in many places along the Japan Sea side of western and northern Japan. Especially at night, the area of snow will spread, and there will be places where the snow will be heavier, including Iwate Prefecture and the flatlands on the Pacific side of Tohoku.
During the day, there will be fewer places with snow or rain, and there will be occasional light sunshine even on the Sea of Japan side. In areas that have experienced heavy snowfall, snow shoveling and snow removal work may be able to proceed, but sufficient caution is required to avoid injury or accidents.
Even in sunny areas, the cold is severe
Temperatures will be at or below normal on both Saturday and Sunday.
Most places in Hokkaido, including Sapporo, experience “midwinter days,” when the temperature does not reach 0℃ even during the day. Temperatures in northern Tohoku will only rise to around 0℃ to 3℃, and in southern Tohoku and Hokuriku, temperatures will only rise to around 5℃. Temperatures from Kanto to Kyushu are expected to be around 8℃ to 10℃, and Okinawa is also expected to reach 20℃.
Even in areas where it will be sunny, the air will remain cold. Please be sure to protect yourself from the cold.
Precautions when removing snow
There are three things to keep in mind when removing snow safely:
(1)Before removing snow, be sure to check that the snow is not loose. Fresh snow or a warm, sunny afternoon can especially loosen the snow on your roof. Icicles may also fall with the snow.
(2) If you use a ladder to climb onto the roof, be sure to secure the ladder firmly with ropes, etc. to prevent it from moving. When moving from the ladder to the roof, extra care must be taken to avoid falling.
(3) When removing snow, leave the snow around the building. In the unlikely event that you fall from the roof, the snow will act as a cushion. Even if it’s a hassle, be sure to wear a lifeline, a helmet, and non-slip shoes. Don’t forget to bring your cell phone with you while you work.
