SNOW MAP: The track and impact of the storm on Thanksgiving Day

Two blasts of wintry mix could travel this Thanksgiving.

Tuesday a winter weather advisory for parts of northern New Englandwith a chance of 0.6 to 1.25 centimeters of rain in the greater Boston area, with mixed precipitation and a chance of up to 2.5 centimeters of snow in the far north and mountains.

When to expect the storm on Thanksgiving Day

Later in the week, we are looking at chances for heavy snow overnight Thursday into Friday. ​​​​Boston could see rain and windy conditions, with snow possible in parts of northern New Hampshire, northern Maine and the Adirondacks.

Its route appears to be along or south of the Massachusetts Turnpike at this time, with some differences between models.

If the air was colder, this route would put us in the snow zone for much of southern New England. But our temperature is much milder and there is nothing to keep us in the cold air. Therefore, this event will see rain, except in cities and towns outside of Route 2 and in the high ground of western Massachusetts, where we could see some snow mixed with a small accumulation.

Thanksgiving trips can be complicated

“The system doesn’t look very powerful at this time,” Hayden Frank, a meteorologist with the Massachusetts Weather Service, said Sunday. “Basically, this will bring rain to the I-95 corridor, so people should travel prepared for wet weather. Unless the system tends to be much cooler, it looks like it’s going to rain.”

Frank said he doesn’t see any major storm systems coming through the weekend anywhere in the country, so commuters heading home on Sunday can expect good driving conditions. However, the temperature will be cooler in the east and warmer in the west.
