The fires took residents of Boulder County and the city of Denver by surprise. They may have been caused by fallen power poles and gusts of wind with speeds of more than 160 kilometers per hour made it difficult for firefighters to control the fire. Fire-fighting vehicles were unable to fly due to the high winds. More than 30,000 people had to leave their homes.
Six slightly injured
A hotel, a shopping center and an apartment complex in Superior, 25 kilometers from downtown Denver, have already gone up in flames. Six people were slightly injured, authorities say it is a miracle that there were no deaths.

Due to the sudden snowfall and a decrease in wind, authorities have been able to rescind all their evacuation orders. People with respiratory problems are strongly advised to stay indoors and close windows and doors, because the snow and wind keep the smoke from the burning and smoldering masses close to the ground.
