The weather is expected to be winter today, with intermittent snow falling on the Sea of Japan side. Snow on the Sea of Japan side, heavy rain in Hokkaido
Today, the 2nd, the atmospheric pressure is high in the west and low in the east, with strong cold air flowing into the sky that can turn even flat areas into snow if it falls. In addition, due to the effects of a low pressure system moving north of Hokkaido, the snow and wind will become stronger, leading to whiteout conditions in some places with no visibility at all.
Snow is likely to fall in Hokkaido and Tohoku, especially on the Sea of Japan side. The predicted maximum instantaneous wind speed is 35 meters on the Sea of Japan side of Hokkaido, and 30 meters on the Pacific side of Hokkaido and the Sea of Japan side of Tohoku. Wave height is expected to be 6 meters on the Sea of Japan and Pacific sides of Hokkaido, and on the Sea of Japan side of Tohoku, and caution is needed against strong winds and high waves. Please be on guard for the impact of blizzards and snowdrifts on traffic in Hokkaido.
It will snow intermittently in Hokuriku. Developed snow clouds are rolling in along the mountains of Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture. Please be alert for traffic impacts such as strandings due to heavy snow into the afternoon. It will likely snow in the northern Kinki region and the San’in area until around noon.
There are places where it snows and rains from the Kanto to Kinki Pacific side, Sanyo, Shikoku, and Kyushu, but it is mainly along the mountains. During the day, the weather will remain largely sunny and dry. Pollen can easily fly, so please take precautions when going out.
In Okinawa, the rain will gradually stop, but cloudy weather will continue during the day.
Midwinter-like cold nationwide
The maximum temperature will be lower than yesterday, and it will be cold like midwinter.
In many places in Okinawa, the temperature is around 17℃, and the temperature does not rise much during the day. From Kyushu to Kanto, it will be extremely cold with many places having temperatures around 8℃. Although the temperature will exceed 10℃ in places like Kochi, it is still expected to be similar to midwinter.
In many places in Hokuriku and the southern Tohoku region, the temperature will be around 4°C to 5°C, and in the northern Tohoku region, it will be around 0°C to 2°C. In Hokkaido, it looks like it will be a mid-winter day with minus temperatures even during the day, and the maximum temperature will be below 0 degrees Celsius.
Across the country, winds will be stronger from the north and west, making it feel colder than it actually is. Depending on the time of day you’re going out, make sure to make good use of cold-weather items such as scarves and gloves.

Wind strength and how it blows
Very strong winds refer to winds with an average wind speed of 20 m/s or more and less than 30 m/s. The speed is approximately 70km to 110km per hour, which is about the same speed as a car on a highway. This is the kind of wind where you have to hold on to something to stand up, making it difficult for your car to drive at normal speeds. When such winds blow, roof tiles and signboards may fall or be blown away. There is a risk of injury from flying objects, so caution is required when performing outdoor activities. If very strong winds are expected, keep flower pots and other objects that can be easily blown away indoors.
Strong winds refer to winds with an average wind speed of 15 m/s or more and less than 20 m/s. It’s so windy that you can’t walk into the wind, and it’s so strong that signs come off and shutters shake. The instantaneous wind speed is often about 1.5 times the average wind speed, and sometimes more than 3 times, so please be careful and vigilant.
