Sleep snoring or snoring often considered as one result of tiring activities and a sign of someone sleeping well. In fact, snoring can actually be dangerous, you know.

Snoring during sleep can be dangerous because the snoring sound occurs due to blocked airways. The existence of breathing problems during sleep can cause hypoxemia or a decrease in oxygen levels in the body.

According to Dr. Andreas Prasadja, RPSGT from the Snoring & Sleep Disorder Clinic, Mitra Kemayoran Hospital, snoring is one of the causes of someone experiencing hypersomnia or sleep disorders that cause excessive drowsiness.

“One of the most common causes of hypersomnia is sleep apnea, so sleep apnea has simple symptoms, snoring and hypersomnia,” said Dr. Ade, his nickname, at a Virtual Media Briefing to commemorate World Sleep Day 2021, Tuesday. (16/3/2021).

In Indonesia, snoring during sleep is often considered something normal and usually occurs while sleeping. In fact, this actually causes a person to become easily sleepy due to poor sleep quality and decreased oxygen levels in the body.

“As a result, waking up not refreshed, sleepy at noon, as a result it becomes hypersomnia (excessive sleepiness). What happens to the body, of course, is that the quality of sleep is poor, the oxygen fluctuates, the heart becomes heavy,” he said.

Furthermore, Dr. Ade also explained tips to prevent someone from snoring while sleeping, namely by maintaining the function of the nose from a young age. Meanwhile, for adults who frequent it snoring while sleeping, a number of ways to overcome it are to maintain body weight, avoid smoking and alcohol, and choose the right sleeping position.

“If you are an adult, so you don’t have sleep apnea, the way you can maintain your weight doesn’t increase, don’t smoke, don’t (consume) alcohol at all, then sleep on your side or half-sitting,” explained Dr. Ade.
