New progress on the Snøhetta-designed Shanghai Opera House

Snow hood just released construction images showing progress on the long-awaited Shanghai Grand Opera Theater in China. With its iconic fan-shaped roof, the studio was commissioned for the project in 2019 following an international design competition. The project is expected to be completed in 2025, seeking attract a wide audience for traditional, classical and experimental performances.

Located in the Expo Houtan neighborhood, the Grand Opera House will be part of a new urban master plan for Shanghai. As part of the “largest initiative in the country’s plan for cultural influence,” the project aims to be a central public place that attracts people from around the world. In fact, it is expected to become one of the main milestones cultural of Shanghai.

The project is designed to unite artists and the public with a new inclusive vision. Its distinctive unfolding fan design symbolizes the vitality of the dance and a shared sense of community. Furthermore, this unique shape transforms into a spiral staircase that connects the ground and the roof, offering panoramic views of the riverside. The spiral element continues throughout the project, weaving through the lobby, rooms and various auditoriums.
The Opera House rooftop also serves as a valuable venue for various events and is open to both regular guests and large-scale groups. This area is transformed into a plaza open twenty-four hours a day throughout the year. The center of the interior of the Opera House is a auditorium with 2,000 seats that has excellent acoustics and cutting-edge technology. Additionally, a 1,200-seat second stage offers a more personal atmosphere, and a 1,000-seat third stage allows for flexible seating arrangements for experiential performances.

The exterior of the Opera House is a facade white that contrasts perfectly with the silk interior lining. This silky smooth material choice also pairs well with oak hardwood floors offering pleasing acoustics. Large glass windows flood the main living room with natural light, creating a variety of environments that change with the seasons. The stage towers become illuminated lanterns at night due to exterior lighting, enhancing the appeal of the Opera House.

This month, the long-awaited mixed project “Airside” by Snøhetta opened to the public in Hong Kong. As the studio’s first project in the country, the scheme serves as a hub in a rejuvenated commercial district. Furthermore, your project “Orionis Planetarium and Observatory” in France was also completed and opened to the public this year. Finally, Construction began on the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library in North Carolina, USA. The project is designed to become a significant landmark destination in Uptown Charlotte.
