Both bodystyles, liftback and station wagon, look production-ready. Only a thin camouflage film hides the details.
Among the ever-increasing flow of SUVs and crossovers, Skoda holds its own with its car offerings. For those looking for evidence, a spy photographer in Austria took quite a few photos of the two prototypes in action. One station wagon and the other liftback.

We wouldn’t blame you if you called the standard roof model in these images a sedan. To Skoda’s credit, the next Superb hides its liftgate, don’t call it a hatchback, in a sleek design that exudes a sedan vibe. However, one image shows the camo-clad prototype parked with the sunroof open, the hood also open, though we can’t look at the engine.
If the camera had been placed further forward, we would most likely have seen a petrol or diesel engine with a displacement of no more than 2.0 liters. A plug-in hybrid model will be part of the lineup, but a full-fledged electric vehicle is not yet expected. The new Superb will use an updated version of the Volkswagen MQB chassis, and it could ditch the manual and go automatic.
It’s without a doubt the best liftback look we’ve had so far, and so it’s easy to see the evolutionary styling language of the next generation model. The main changes will come at the front with a larger octagonal grille flanked by narrow headlights and a square chin with large vertically oriented angled air vents. Similar lighting changes occur at the rear in the form of thinner lenses, and if we zoom in on the rear spy photos, we can see the outlines of the lights under the camouflage shell.
As for the station wagon, the taillight designs appear slightly larger to better match the proportions of the larger rear end. During towing tests, the long roof still looks like a workhorse when needed and a sports wagon when not tied to a trailer. The wagon prototype also gives us a glimpse of the new Superb dashboard with more digital screens. The redesign is expected to accompany a host of driver assistance systems and other features.
Recent teasers from Skoda report that the camouflage will be removed in the fall, marking a new generation of Superb for the 2024 model year.
