Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has Ray Tracing, bringing the AAA laptop gaming experience to HP

HAWAII, KOMPAS.com – Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 which was introduced Qualcommon Tuesday (11/15/2022), it became Qualcomm’s first chipset equipped with the technology ray tracing.

Ray tracing is a visual technology that uses lighting to make video games look more realistic. Ray tracing on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is said to make games more realistic.

According to Senior Director of Technology, Snapdragon Studios Qualcomm Technologies, Todd Lemoinne, Qualcomm introduces this technology because it wants to bring the quality of ray-traced lighting, like a gaming computer or laptop, to smartphones.

This is done to provide the best experience when users of devices with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 play mobile games.

“We want to bring a more realistic mobile gaming experience. With ray tracing technology through Snapdragon Elite Gaming, we want to bring a triple AAA gaming experience from laptop to smartphone,” said Todd.

The ray tracing technology carried by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset is produced by special hardware, not using software.

So, according to Todd, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 powered devices will be able to display more natural light displays when playing games.

For example, when viewing shadows or reflections of objects while in water during a game.

However, this ray tracing will only be available if your device’s screen supports 2K resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels).

Collaboration with Ubisoft

One of Qualcomm’s current partner game developers is Ubisoft.

Todd said that one of the games made by Ubisoft that can work great with ray tracing on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is Rainbow Six Mobile. This game will be released in 2023.

“There are another 30 games in the pipeline that are optimized for ray tracing on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The 30 games are built using Unreal Engine 5,” Todd said.

Does ray tracing make it hot?

When asked about the potential for overheating when ray tracing is on, Todd himself didn’t give a clear answer. He just pointed it out ray tracing in Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 prioritizes energy efficiency.
