Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Chip Threatens User Privacy

Jakarta, Selular.ID – Qualcomm Technologies’ 2021 Tech Summit which was held on December 1 recently, Qualcomm introduced its newest premium 5G chipset, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

The latest flagship chipset, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 with several specifications and features improvements compared to its predecessor, Snapdragon 888.

Unfortunately, there is one feature of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 that is controversial because it has the potential to threaten user privacy. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 feature that has the potential to threaten user privacy is the Always-On ISP feature.

Of course, this news threatens smartphone users, because Android smartphones with the next generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 are expected to be launched in early 2022.

But Qualcomm has its own reasons for providing an explanation regarding these features, with the latest innovations presented, Qualcomm seeks to make things comfortable for users and allow them to lock or unlock their phones without touch,

This feature allows the front camera of the device to be active continuously for the purpose of automatically unlocking the phone with FaceID.

The ability of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 which is able to activate the front camera continuously can threaten user privacy.

This is because smartphones with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will continue to record images through the camera even when the phone is not in use.

The data taken by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip phone camera is feared to be shared with third parties or misused.

In addition, Qualcomm claims that the Always-On ISP feature can prevent users from other parties trying to peek at the user’s smartphone.

Always-On Camera feature can be set
The company has underlined that users will be able to unlock the phone as soon as they see it. There’s no need for a fingerprint sensor or a series of face detection algorithms, not even voice commands. And when the user looks away, the phone will be locked.

And the last is the security aspect that Qualcomm focuses on. That the phone will unlock as soon as someone looks away will ensure the data is saved.

If the camera detects the face of the user who is looking at the phone along with the faces of others who are also in the frame, the phone will be unlocked but personal information such as notification content will be hidden.

The Always-On camera feature on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset can be turned off manually through settings.
