Snapchat uses user selfies in advertising

According to a press release dated September 20, 2024, the US instant messaging service Snapchat apparently wants to use selfies generated by artificial intelligence from users of the platform for advertising purposes. The company is at least reserving this option in its new terms of service, as “404 Media” reports.

“My Selfie” function

When using Snapchat’s “My Selfie” feature, users should therefore be aware of what can happen to the images. According to Support page may be affected by the advance in advertising.

Snapchat users who do not want their selfies to be used for the company’s marketing purposes should deactivate the app’s default setting “See my selfie in ads,” experts advise, referring to the opt-out solution in the terms of use.

Advertising partners locked out

According to Snapchat, the page that appears when the app is used for the first time indicates that the images are being used. Users also have control over whether the function is active or inactive at any time. Advertising partners do not have access to users’ content.
