Snap is preparing a new Spectacles model, its fashionable glasses for recording Snaps, but with a different approach. The new Spectacles will feature screens capable of AR effects, according to a new report from Information.
The product “is not intended for the consumer market, but for developers and creators,” according to a person familiar with the plan cited in the report. Two people with direct knowledge of the device also said the company has revived a years-long effort to build a drone.
Upcoming Spectacles will be able to superimpose Snapchat lenses – a virtual beard or a rainbow, say – onto the real world, people familiar with the device said. Previous versions of Spectacles couldn’t display those effects on glasses because they lacked screens.
Snap could announce its new Spectacles at its annual developer conference to be held virtually in late May.
The information says that the new Spectacles “will be able to superimpose the Snapchat lenses in the real world” and “the previous versions of Spectacles could not show those effects on the lenses because they did not have screens.”
After mixed results with the latest Spectacles models, Snap plans to enter the AR race, which already has competitors like Facebook, Apple, and Microsoft. Earlier today, we reported on Niantic’s endeavor in this new era of augmented reality.
This time around, Snap appears to be shifting its focus to a developer approach, but it is unclear how much it will cost and if it will have the necessary appeal. Creators will reportedly be a target market for the more advanced Spectacles as well.
Snap also seems to have changed his mind about building a drone. The project that was not a priority four years ago is now, according to people familiar with the project. It’s unclear when the company plans to ship the drone or what its differentiating features will be.
