A day out by car, a long train ride or flying to a distant destination: many Dutch people like to take something to eat with them on the way. They make sandwiches or make snacks. What is handy to take with you and what should you not keep for too long?
By: Ellen Den HollanderThis week, the Nutrition Center draws attention to food while traveling via social media. Of course you should drink a lot of water on warmer days and choose food and drinks that have a longer shelf life. If you take fruit or raw vegetables with you, you can wash them before departure and store them in a well-sealed container.

The first holiday week is sometimes spent in the toilet or in the hotel room with a screeching diarrhoea, food technologist IJsbrand Velzeboer expresses it eloquently. Washing hands after using the toilet and before preparing food is very important.
–
According to Velzeboer, an example of safe food is sauerkraut, because it only contains harmless lactic acid bacteria. You can also take ‘perpetually’ products such as tomato sauce, gherkins and silver onions with you without any problems, he says.

The Nutrition Center advises to take bread or unprocessed fruit. Suitable spreads are 100 percent peanut butter or sandwich spread. “Dry biscuits, booklets, candy and mints are fine,” adds Rijkelt Beumer, microbiologist at Wageningen University & Research.

Tips

Meat products are not so suitable to take away
Do not choose raw meat, chicken, eggs or fish, the Nutrition Center advises. Beumer can only agree with that. “It concerns foods that can make you sick, such as meat sandwiches. I wouldn’t take those with you. Think of filet americain, but also meat products such as luncheon meat. If you take that with you unrefrigerated and you go out all day, you can growing up something dangerous.”

Cheese can. “Play it safe, so don’t choose raw milk cheeses.” Beumer himself does not take anything with him on a trip. “You deprive yourself of the opportunity to have something delicious in another country.”
