In the city, fair trade is anchored in everyday life: fair trade coffee is served at local council meetings, and a council resolution ensures that fair products are also used in administration. Citizens can also find fair trade goods in many of the city’s shops and restaurants. Events such as the “Gmünd for Tomorrow” campaign weeks and the use of the world shop and an unpackaged shop also ensure a growing awareness of social and ecological consumption.
Where can you find fair products?
A digital “Fair Shopping Guide” gives the population orientation as to where fairly traded and sustainable products can be purchased in Schwäbisch Gmünd. It is available at gmuendfuermorgen.de/fairer-einkaufsfuehrer.html. Schwäbisch Gmünd is one of over 880 Fairtrade towns in Germany and, through certification, shows how local commitment can strengthen fair trade. Further information about the Fairtrade Towns campaign and the certification criteria can be found at fairtrade-towns.de.

A new “Fair-O-Mat” has recently been installed in the entrance area of the town hall – a snack machine that offers fair snacks such as bars, gummy bears and chocolate. Citizens and administrative employees can purchase fair products directly here. The machine is the result of a collaboration between the Office for Sustainable Development, Climate Protection and Citizen Participation and the Weltladen Schwäbisch Gmünd and was supported by funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
