SMS from the cash register at the end of shopping. The government has already decided: a receipt revolution awaits us. Who will benefit from it and how: 24/10/2021

A purchase receipt that will not wrinkle, will not fade, will not get lost among a dozen less important receipts in your wallet; you will be able to find it quickly in your e-mail or SMS box on your phone. This is – at least in theory – the e-receipts, which the government has just given the green light, are supposed to look like. SMSAPI experts are looking at whether this solution can replicate the success of an e-prescription.

This is – at least in theory – the e-receipts, which the government has just given the green light, are supposed to look like. Soon we will all start collecting e-receipts on our phones

According to the plans for the introduction of e-receipts disclosed by the Ministry of Finance, the use of this innovation is to be voluntary for both stores and buyers. After the expected entry into force of the relevant regulation, the software of several hundred thousand online cash registers operating in Polish stores will require the necessary updates, which will probably take some time. Logistics are also a challenge.

– It is important to plan logistics issues so that the e-receipt helps to shorten the time of shopping, and not extend the queues at the checkout. Hence, retailers need to find good ways of submitting data to collect receipts. It must be remembered that the GDPR obliges to secure the collection and processing of data. Therefore, the issue of a safe process of collecting a telephone number for this purpose will be important, as well as safe data storage and ensuring that the whole thing works efficiently, suggests Jakub Kluz Product and Frontend Manager in SMSAPI.

One way to avoid problems in the area of personal data protection may be, for example, to organize the system of generating and transferring e-receipts so that the cashier does not have access to customer data. Automatically sending e-receipts could be available when finalizing purchases, e.g. with electronic payment.
– For the automatic sending of purchase confirmations, it would probably be necessary to technologically integrate the software of cash registers with banking systems and tools for automated sending of e-mails or mass SMS distribution, such as we offer in SMSAPI – says Maja Wiśniewska Marketing Manager in SMSAPI.

GIS warns! Chocolate and others – another popular products …

Some retail chains have decided to anticipate the impending wave of digitization and have already made it possible to collect e-receipts in their shopping applications, although they are still legally obliged to issue them also in paper form. Lidl, Carrefour and Leroy Merlin have been ready to handle e-receipts in their own ecosystem for some time. However, not all customers will be willing to install shopping apps, especially those they visit only occasionally. Similarly, many brands will probably find that their own application for collecting receipts is too much of an investment for them and will stay with e-mails or texts. The evidence that we may need several channels to collect e-receipts is electronic discount coupons and tickets. None of the technologies turned out to be dominant in this field. Some stores encourage the use of dedicated applications, others prefer marketing communication via e-mail, others choose simple codes sent in SMS messages.

– Mobile text messaging turns out to be very flexible. The discount codes sent with them are easy to use both when shopping online and simply show them to the cashier in a stationary store wanting to get a discount. Our last year’s report shows that twice as many customers receive promotional offers on the phone than on the computer. Although SMS does not seem technologically advanced, it is very popular when shopping. Customers appreciate the fact that they are practically impossible to lose, and if necessary, they can be found quickly. This feature can also pay off with e-receipts. I suspect that we will be happy to replace the mess of scraps in the wallet with digital receipts on the phone nicely arranged according to dates or shops – notes Maja Wiśniewska from SMSAPI.
