Part of the Ekkersrijt business park in Son was closed for hours on Sunday afternoon. This was due to a fire at Remondis Recycling and the smoke that was released as a result. At the beginning of the afternoon a quantity of construction and demolition waste caught fire. The fire service believes the troop was extinguished by 5.30pm on Sunday afternoon. The police stopped traffic in part of Ekkersrijt for about four o’clock because of the possible spread of toxic substances.
The fire is being fought by two fire extinguishers and an aerial platform. The fire caused significant smoke nuisance. There was also a smell of burning in part of the business park around half past four.
‘Scalding or combustible stuff in pile’
According to a spokesperson for Remondis, they have not been distributed. He also said that the police are investigating the cause of the fire. “It could have been caused by overheating, but it could also have been caused by combustible stuff in the pile,” the recycling company’s spokesman added.
The fire was brought under control around a quarter to one in the afternoon. “But it will take a longer time before everything is completely extinguished,” a fire department spokesperson said quickly.
Measurements taken
Later in the afternoon it was reported that the waste wood will have been extinguished around half past five. “We do this by dismantling the pile using excavators and then extinguishing the burning wood. We monitor the smoke in the area,” the fire service tweeted. Measurements were taken at a nearby fishing pond, the business park itself and the residential area across the A50 motorway. The slaked pile will be discarded.
A few years ago, Remondis Recycling took over the processing of waste in Son from Baetsen.
