Smoke from fire disturbs Laval hospital

The smoke caused by the conflagration of a huge pile of debris at the Multi-Recyclage sorting center has been disturbing since Saturday in Laval.

The mountain of debris, made up mostly of wood residue, ignited a few weeks ago without being seen. The smoke from the fire, blown by the wind, inconveniences the employees of the Cité-de-la-Santé hospital.

“We are talking about red eyes, watery eyes, itchy throat, dizziness, intense headaches,” said CSN member Jean-François Houle on Monday.

Mr. Houle adds that the establishment has no means of countering the arrival of smoke.

“The problem is that right now, the ventilation should be closed to prevent smoke from entering the interior. But with COVID-19, you can’t turn off the ventilation. If we close the ventilation, we must give N95 masks to all our workers. ”

Municipality firefighters have been working hard since the smoke arrived. Extinguishing the fire is no easy task, as the flames are inside the debris pile.

“We want to tell the population that, if there is smoke heading towards their neighborhood, the windows and doors of their building must be closed. The ventilation systems must also be closed ”, explains the fire chief, Patrick Ferland.

“The smoke can be irritating and bothersome, but it’s not toxic at this time.”

Ending a fire like this could take three to ten days. Citizens living in the surrounding area will need to be patient.

The origin of the fire is not criminal, but rather caused by instantaneous combustion due to the decomposition of materials.
