Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has been evacuated after a smoke bomb exploded near him during an election speech at the port of Wakayama city.

Japanese media report that the prime minister is unharmed. A person would have been arrested.

Kishida was supposed to deliver a speech in Wakayama in support of a candidate from his Liberal Democratic Party.

Japan is on high alert for security for its politicians after former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot dead during an election speech last July.
