Smoke Appears in Russian Module on Space Station, What’s Up?

Moscow

Presence of smoke detected in module Russia which is in International Space Station (ISS). A number of astronauts and cosmonauts reported a smell like burning plastic inside the module.

As reported Reuters, Thursday (9/9/2021), the Russian space agency, Roscosmos, quoted by the news agency RIA reported that the smoke detector alarm was observed to be active inside a Russian module called Zvezda on board the ISS. This incident occurred while the battery was charging overnight.

The Zvezda module is known to be the residence location for the ISS crew.

In its report, the news agency RIA which cites the United States (US) space agency audio communication broadcast or NASA, mentions a Russian cosmonaut, Oleg Novitsky, seeing and smelling smoke inside the ISS.

French astronaut Thomas Pesquet also reported the smell of burning plastic or electronics spreading from the Russian segment to parts of the US.

But in its statement, Roscosmos, also stated that the whole system then worked fine. Even the plan for the space walk activity on Thursday (9/9) will still be carried out.

The ISS is known to have experienced a number of incidents in recent times.

The most recent occurred last July when a software glitch and possible human error sent the ISS flying out of control for a while when the booster jets on the Russian module suddenly activated after arriving in space orbit. At that time, the ISS was reported to have shifted from its normal position at an altitude of 400 kilometers from the Earth’s surface.
