This was a question commonly raised by the two municipalities. Despite the establishment of a single union for water management in Guadeloupe, Deshaies and Le Lamentin seceded, considering their current situation more advantageous for their constituents. Probably to calm things down, the SMGEAG trade union committee has chosen to play appeasement, giving the two municipalities a new deadline before analyzing their situation again.

Perhaps a wise decision to avoid coming to an open conflict between Deshaies and Le Lamentin on the one hand and the single water union in Guadeloupe, the SMGEAG. Concretely, the meeting which was held this Friday, May 19, 2023 at the union’s headquarters decided to extend the public service delegation which had been granted to Deshaies and Le Lamentin to manage issues relating to water distribution and sanitation in their respective territories. This extension will be for a period of 6 months.
However, the union council has therefore also provided a deadline of June 30, 2024 for the actors to agree on the new methods of public service delegation and the new specifications to implement them.
A special situation recognized for these two municipalities which had chosen not to abandon their own water management authority and to resist the obligation to merge into the single water syndicate. They also asserted their ability to offer their constituents a cheaper water source than that of the syndicate.
There is no doubt that this derogation which goes in their direction will give ideas to all the municipalities which had had to choose to abandon their management to join the union. One of these municipalities is none other than that of the president of the SMGEAG, Trois Rivières, once renowned for the quality of service of its municipal management.
