SMEs record more turnover and profit due to support measures | NOW

Small and medium-sized enterprises recorded more turnover and profit last year, reports the audit firm SRA, which examined more than seven thousand annual accounts of small and medium-sized companies.

The turnover of Dutch SMEs rose by an average of 10 percent last year and profits by 38 percent. “The financial figures of SMEs have never been so positive. The capital position and creditworthiness are also at record high,” according to SRA. The positive figures are due, among other things, to the government’s support measures.

According to SRA, the buffers are badly needed due to the major challenges that SMEs now face. “Companies must arm themselves for the future and continue to innovate and invest, also in the energy transition,” says SRA board member Harry Marissen.

Furthermore, partly due to the war in Ukraine, energy prices have risen sharply, there is a scarcity of raw materials and personnel and the purchasing power of consumers has declined due to high inflation. According to the trade association MKB-Nederland, small and medium-sized enterprises are also finding it increasingly difficult to obtain financing.

SRA emphasizes that the differences between the companies are large. For example, the catering industry was far from at the level it was before corona. Turnover has increased most strongly in the industry.
