Smejkal: Unvaccinated in the Czech Republic will find the virus

“I evaluate the current situation in the Czech Republic positively, it is quite clear,” Smejkal responded to Novinek’s question, how he views the fact that despite the fact that daily increases in those infected, except holidays, are rising again, hospitalized numbers remain low, as does the number death.

The optimistic trend in the daily increase in infected covid-19 in recent weeks began to reverse in the Czech Republic at the end of June, when information emerged about a faster spread of the more contagious delta variant.

And the reproductive number, which indicates the average number of infected from one positive test, rose to its highest value since February.

Smejkal, however, insists that the delta will pass through the republic as elsewhere. “It does no harm to the vaccinated,” he emphasizes.

He therefore urges us to quickly reach the level of immunization that the UK currently has, where more than 86 per cent of people have received at least one dose of vaccine and 64.9 per cent of the population have been fully vaccinated.

In contrast, in the Czech Republic, 48.2 percent of citizens received the first dose of vaccine, and both received only 34 percent.

“If we get to where the UK is in vaccination quickly, we don’t have to worry,” says the main epidemiologist at Prague’s IKEM.

In this context, he points out that there is still a significant percentage of those who have not received a single dose of the vaccine in the risk groups. “The virus will find the unvaccinated at risk, and we don’t have very few of them,” Smejkal concludes.

There were 254 new cases of coronavirus in the Czech Republic on Thursday, which is 88 more than last week. There were 279 new infections on Wednesday, which is even 143 more than last Wednesday.

At the same time, the reproduction number after the holidays further increased to 1.2 from the previous 1.08. However, only 33 people were hospitalized and no deaths were associated with the disease.
