They like the idea of conveying a message while they ‌smoke. Thus, if we can identify these failure points ​and implement interventions at the right time, we have the prospect to increase the success of the quit attempt.”

Stone further emphasized the app’s design philosophy: “We aim to take the latest thinking in intervention design and present it in a convenient, wearable package with minimal user burden and ⁤maximum engagement in behavior change; ⁤and by doing this, make a difference in people’s lives.”

The study, published ​in the journal JMIR Formative Research, involved 18 participants aged 18 to 70 who smoked more than 10 cigarettes daily. Using TicWatches loaded with the app for two weeks, participants completed a post-trial questionnaire. A positive 66%⁢ found the smartwatch and motion-sensing technology acceptable, while 61% deemed the message content relevant.

Positive feedback centered on increased smoking ⁢awareness, positive feelings about ‍quitting, prompting reflection, habit reduction, and sustained encouragement. However, the study also revealed areas for advancement, including message repetition, response time, message variety, and ‌clarity.

The researchers plan to conduct a larger, ⁤long-term study incorporating more ‍diverse messaging strategies. ‌Alizee frogel, prevention policy manager at⁣ Cancer Research UK, commented,⁣ “This study shows that smartwatches could be a ⁣useful method to help people stop smoking, but more research is needed to understand how effective⁤ they are. There are many tools⁢ available to help people stop​ smoking, and getting ‌support from a free local smoking⁢ cessation‌ service will‍ give you the best chance of quitting successfully.”
