In the midst of a pandemic, smartphone manufacturers have not stopped launching products – they seem to be competing to bring the newest cellphones to Indonesia. What cellphone brands have succeeded in dominating the Indonesian smartphone market during the pandemic in 2020?
Xiaomi and Realme are leading Indonesia’s online smartphone sales amid the pandemic, according to reports Counterpoint Research. Meanwhile, Vivo and Oppo dominate overall sales, according to an IDC Indonesia study.
“Smart phone sales in Indonesia have grown throughout the year, topping the fourth quarter of 2020 with 20% of online sales,” reported Counterpoint, quoted from KrAsia, Friday (26/3/2021).

Lazada is the site for the highest smartphone seller, while Shopee is in the next position. Meanwhile, Blibli, Akulaku, Bukalapak, and JD.id filled a smaller proportion, according to Senior Analyst Glen Cardoza.
After the decline in the first 2 quarters, sales rebounded at the end of the year; grew 23% YoY. “Sales started to increase again in the third quarter,” said Cardoza.
In line with Counterpoint, IDC Indonesia also recorded a sharp 18% YoY decline in the first half.
In the fourth quarter, smartphone shipments increased sharply with a 19% YoY growth between July and December, reaching 11.7 million units. Overall, 36.8 million cell phones were sold in 2020; grew 1% YoY than 2019.
Vivo and Oppo had the largest market share, 23.3% and 23.2% respectively at year-end; thanks to the retail channel network that is still operating for lockdown.
Xiaomi ranked third with 15.3%; while Realme 14%; then there is Samsung which controls 13.5% – down from 17.2% in the III quarter.
