Smartphones: 2023 is going to be a terrible year!

After the chip crisis, it seems that it’s just misfortune ahead of the ‘tech’ world, especially in 2023, more specifically in the part of smartphones. After all, with the economic crisis, and manufacturers raising prices almost crazily, it is very likely that this year will be a record one, but on the negative side.

Smartphones: 2023 is going to be a terrible year!

Therefore, the year 2022 was frankly bad for the world of technology, where, of course, we have to point out the smartphone part. Incidentally, despite an increase in demand in the last quarter of the year, thanks to Black Friday and Christmas, the truth is that things did not go very well for the most important names in the mobile world.

After all, according to IDC, despite Black Friday and Christmas, the fourth quarter of 2022 meant the biggest drop in sales ever, in a single quarter. To get an idea, in the last quarter of 2021, when the famous chip crisis already existed, around 367.3 million smartphones were moved. Comparatively, in the last quarter of 2022, the manufacturer only managed to move 300 million devices, without the huge weight of the crisis and shortage of components.

In total, in 2021, 1.36 billion devices were sent to the market. In 2022, this number only reached 1.21 billion, the lowest number since 2013.

By all indications, 2023 will be worse.

Why? Much is said about inflation, economic uncertainty, among other things… But the truth is that despite the significant impact of all these factors, manufacturers are not honest with customers. After all, the market is once again going through a stagnation phase. Smartphones are almost all the same, and prices keep going up.

A top of the range Android will start to cost €1500 in 2023. Think it makes sense? An increase that will obviously also reach the mid-range, with a “decent” device being launched at €400~500, when in the past it would cost around €250.

In short, we have to wait and see what will happen with Samsung’s February 1st launch. A moment that will serve as a window into what the future holds for us in the mobile world.
