Smartphone Vendors Overtake Each Other to Dominate the Indonesian Market, So Who’s the Champion?

Jakarta, Selular.ID – Smartphone competition in the Indonesian market is moving very competitively, and it is interesting for us to investigate. And it seems endless for us to measure what the competition map for domestic smartphone vendors is like today, because changes in dominance tend to be fast.

However, what we need to point out is that, it’s actually a matter of how we see the strategy of each vendor to compete in the Indonesian market which is famous for being ‘sweet’ to work on, especially in the new normal era where the level of dependence on technology is so high.

As an illustration, in 2020, market research firm IDC noted that the number of smartphone shipments in Indonesia experienced an annual growth of one percent with a total of 36.8 million units.

And the top 5 smartphone vendors in Indonesia at that time were still inhabited by the same players as in the previous quarters. However, some of them swap positions.

It was recorded that in Q4 2020, Vivo controlled the Indonesian market with a market share of 23.3 percent, only very slightly adrift of Oppo with a percentage of 23.2 percent and sitting in second place.

Xiaomi is in third place with a market share of 15.3 percent, followed by Realme which crawled to fourth place with a market share of 14 percent. And Samsung at that time was thrown into fifth position with a market share of 13.5 percent.

And the change in dominance is happening again, now Xiaomi is actually the number one brand in the second quarter of 2021 in Indonesia. According to Canalys data, Xiaomi dominates with a market share of 28 percent and the fastest growth among the top five smartphone brands, which is 112 percent year on year (YoY).

The drastic change in power was so fast, Vivo even according to this report was ranked 5th with a market share of 12 percent, down 28 percent. While the second position remains stable, controlled by Oppo with a market share of 20 percent, Samsung with a market share of 18 percent, growing 23 percent, and Realme, which has won a market share of 12 percent, growing 6 percent.

Seeing the overtake of technology manufacturers in the domestic market is certainly interesting, the article is endless, and who is the real winner? And what is the strategy of each vendor, which also deserves to be investigated as to how reliable it is to compete.
