Smartphone Market: Top Selling Devices in Q2 2024 – 2024-08-10 04:44:55

Apple and Samsung continued to dominate the smartphone top-10 list best sellers in the second quarter of 2024, occupying nine positions together, according to the Global Monthly Handset Model Sales Tracker by Counterpoint Research. However, in the corresponding second quarter of last year, the two brands had occupied all 10 places in the ranking.

What changed this year is that Samsung ceded a spot to Xiaomi, which returned to the list after two consecutive quarters of dominance by Apple and Samsung.

Apple has kept the number of spots on the list with its four iPhone models. However, the placement of iPhones on the list weakened. While the iPhone 14 series and iPhone 13 had taken all the top four spots in the second quarter of 2023, the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro took the top three spots respectively this quarter.

The iPhone 14 is limited to sixth place.

Apple’s contribution to the top 10 in terms of total sales volume and sales share declined year-on-year in Q2 2024. However, the volume and sales share of the Pro series increased, proving, along with a drop in its ranking Older generation iPhones, shift in demand to higher-end smartphones.

While a slight drop in the position held by Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra at number nine in Q2 2024 compared to the S23 Ultra’s position eight in Q2 2023, it may seem to buck the upward trend of the premium category, which shifted some of the sales to the first quarter, but the relatively early launch of the company’s flagship this year plays a role.

The Samsung’s top smartphone on the list this quarter was the Galaxy A15 5Gfollowed by the 4G version of the phone. Offering effective multitasking capabilities, the A15 series is popular at the lower end of the mid-range segment. The other two Samsung models on the list also belonged to its A series. The Galaxy A55 5G, which comes in at the higher end of the mid-range and has some interesting security features, took seventh place. The Galaxy A05, another lower-end model, took 10th place.

Return of Xiaomi

Xiaomi was the only other brand to make the list, with the Redmi 13C 4G taking the eighth spot. Its predecessor, the Redmi 12C, had also entered the top 10. With the availability of Redmi smartphones expanding beyond their traditional strongholds in Asia, the Middle East and Africa (MEA) and the Caribbean and Latin America (CALA), the Redmi C is an upgrade over the lower-end A-series models, which have been Redmi’s usual entries in the relevant list.

The general picture

Looking at the bigger picture, the number of premium phones in the top 10 in Q2 2024 was fiveas in the second quarter of 2023, but their cumulative sales as a share of the global smartphone market fell by about 1.5%. The earlier launch of the S24 Ultra and the difficulties faced by the iPhone 15 series in China contributed to this decline, which does not reflect a wider trend.

Additionally, a large portion of the Chinese market lost to Apple has gone to Huawei’s premium phones. As the number of smartphones with GenAI features increases throughout the year, particularly with the launch of the iPhone 16 series, Counterpoint expects a continued long-term trend of the rise of the premium class of devices to continue.
