Once every two months we publish an update of the Smartphone Best Buy Guide. May is traditionally the month of midrange launches, after most manufacturers have released their high-end devices in the first few months of the year. We have now all received and tested the top models of OnePlus, Samsung, Xiaomi and Motorola. OPPO is conspicuously absent from Western Europe this year, opting to release its high-end Find X6 series only in China.
The most important new mid-range phone, at least when looking at the sales figures, is generally one from Samsung’s Galaxy A series. This year it is the Galaxy A54, which we recently discussed in detail next to its cheaper brother, the A34. It is striking that the Samsung mid-sized cars are increasingly looking like the top models in the S23 series, but unfortunately the price is also increasing year on year. Whether they manage to make it recommended, you can read later in this BBG.
In addition to the A34 and A54, we received thirteen other new phones for this edition of the BBG, all of which we subjected to our regular tests. One of the eye-catchers is the Nokia G22, an affordable phone that is very easy to repair. You can simply order spare parts and tools from iFixit. The Xiaomi 13 Lite is more literally a highlight. This smartphone has two flash lights on the front to take better selfies in the dark. Few devices that come out in the West also have that. In addition to cheaper phones, we also received some more expensive devices. ASUS shipped its ROG Phone 7, the latest in its line of gaming phones, featuring additional trigger buttons and active cooling. If you don’t need all that spectacle, you might like the ThinkPhone from Motorola: a well-designed smartphone that is specifically intended for the business user.
We have assessed all devices again and taken the price development into account to determine which smartphones per category are the most highly recommended at the moment. Some recommendations from the previous Best Buy Guide return in this BBG, but there are also some newcomers who have made it to the recommendation.
