So-called smart devices are good helpers in the home, but some time ago experts warned that they could also cause serious problems. It is one thing to have a computer or mobile phone at home where you expect a threat.
Concern for safety
But have you ever thought that the refrigerator or the TV might be the weak point in your home? In the latter case, it is becoming more common, because televisions are one of the devices that are becoming smarter faster.
Today, only a few people have a television at home, they turn it on and just tune in predefined channels. Currently, even very cheap devices have their own operating system and are basically entertainment centers for the whole home.
But the problem is, as soon as we put the TV in the home, we usually don’t care about it anymore and treat it like it’s just a stupid device. And already in the Czech Republic it is starting to show that this is not just a hypothetical situation.
The manufacturer failed
There have been cases of LG TVs containing a system hole that various organized groups can use and gain control over your device. This is exactly what Bitdefender warned against, pointing out the vulnerability of versions 4 to 7 of the WebOS operating system.
Specifically, these versions and TVs are:
- WebOS 4.9.7 to 5.30.40 – LG43UM7000PLA
- WebOS 04.50.51 to 5.5.0 – OLED55CXPUA
- WebOS 0.36.50 to 6.3.3-442 – OLED48C1PUB
- WebOS 03.33.85 to 7.3.1-43 – OLED55A23LA
Apparently, hundreds of thousands of households are using some of these devices and now don’t know what’s involved. In addition, experts pointed out that the manufacturer fell asleep. The problem was already known last November and the patch has not been released now.
Even if the fix is already available, it is assumed that most people will not download it anyway, because they have no idea about any problems and it does not happen to them that they should be present regularly maintaining the television. It can easily happen to them that someone else is taking over their TV remotely and they can mess up the whole home network, because the device seems to be connected to the home Wi-Fi.
