Smart Indoor Siren Test: our opinion, our lab measurements

Before attaching the siren to its hanging system, it must be paired with the camera. To do this, go to the very clear tutorial of the Security app. The four AA batteries (Duracell) of the siren are included and already housed in their case. Just remove a small plastic to release the contactors inside. From then on, a green LED indicator flashes in the center of the siren, which should be placed about 10 cm from the camera. Do not wait too long: the camera does not recognize the siren after 2 or 3 min, we had to remove the batteries from their housing to reset it and carry out our mission.

Netatmo recommends that you do not configure automatic siren activation in the event of an intrusion before a minimum face profile is “strong enough”. This assumes that it takes time for the camera’s facial recognition system to be fully operational – we estimate it to be several days. In the parameters, the siren is automatically placed in automatic triggering. It is possible to modify this setting, as well as to set the duration of its 110 db (A) alarm from 3 to 30 min, to activate a pick-up attempt detection, but above all to choose in the parameters of its (or its) camera (s) which will trigger the siren.

By default, in an empty house, each detection (unknown faces, animals, other movements) simply generates a video recording and sends a notification. It is necessary to activate Record, send a notification and activate the siren for the alarm to be given if necessary. In the section When known people are at home, all parameters (detection of unknown faces, animals and other movements) are set to Ignore. So, unless you decide otherwise, nothing will happen when someone recognized by the camera passes in front of them.

We also discovered in the settings that it is possible to replace the 110 db (A) alarm with barking, baby noises or domestic sounds, deviousness intended to simulate a presence (and incidentally not to inconvenience its neighbors) . Several tests carried out attest to the perfect functioning of the camera + siren tandem.

After a week of using the camera (so that it “learns” the identity of the people living under our roof), we carried out full-scale tests with the entry of people supposedly known, others “unknown” and by performing motion simulations. Our camera + siren duo performed flawlessly. Blandine, Irene and your servant were systematically recognized without setting off the alarm. Manon, who had not been memorized by the camera, activated the siren, then a movement of the hand in front of the camera also started the latter. Instantly, our smartphone received a notification that the siren had been triggered. Access to the Live video allowed to check what was happening, then to silence the siren remotely.

When the people known are all considered to be outside (time can be set in the settings), the system is automatically activated to protect the home.
