Small Towns Defying Odds: Unlikely Winners in EuroMillions and Loto

Many people have seen their lives change thanks to the Lotto and EuroMillions, but it seems that players from certain small towns have a better chance of winning the jackpot than others. This is in fact what this Figaro survey reveals on the municipalities where jackpots have often been won since 1976, when the Loto was launched.

EuroMillions and Loto: the metropolises in the running!

To establish a ranking, Le Figaro used figures from Française des jeux. Not surprisingly, metropolises, such as Paris, Marseille, Lyon, where the population is highly concentrated, are the cities which have seen a large number of EuroMillions winners, with Paris and Marseille in the lead. In detail, Le Figaro had listed 37 municipalities which recorded the most winners (more than 6 people having won at least €500,000).

The third name on the list is no more surprising: Nice. This is a lucky destination for many Lotto and EuroMillions players. She has 25 winners to her account. Antibes, Toulon, Tarbes, Royan, Caen, Pantin, Nantes, Carcassonne, Chalon-sur-Saône, Épinal, Évry, La Rochelle, Lille and Bourges share 6th position with 6 winners to their credit.

You should know that the players are located all over the country. The Loto and EuroMillions are reserved for both the city and the countryside. Granted, the places where people win most often are primarily large cities with populations over 100,000, but there are some surprising exceptions.

Three small towns escape the rule

Indeed, and while statistics show that cities with a high concentration of population hold the list of cities that have had the most winners, Antibes escapes this rule. With 6 winners, this small town of less than 100,000 inhabitants (74,875 inhabitants in 2015) stands out in EuroMillions and the Loto.

Le Figaro also cites the example of Papeete, in Tahiti, the capital of French Polynesia, which has 10 Loto winners. Even more surprising, it is this town of less than 30,000 inhabitants which holds the biggest gain in the history of the Loto, i.e. 220 million euros. It was won in October 2021 by a woman who was playing for the first time in her life.

The same media also mentions the small town of Alès (around 40,000 inhabitants), the sub-prefecture of Gard, which has won its place in this list hands down. She has two big winners, one in 2016 with a sum of 6 million euros, and the second in 2018, with 1 million euros.
