Small-scale demonstration on Museumplein proceeded smoothly

More than a hundred people gathered on Museumplein this afternoon to demonstrate against the corona measures. This made it a lot quieter than the past few weeks. Most protesters have since left the square.

Last week, as on many other Sundays, things were different. Then there were still 334 protesters detained. 305 of these have been banned from the area. This may have something to do with today’s lower turnout.

No security risk area

Today, the Museumplein and its surroundings were not seen as a so-called safety risk area by the municipality. A spokesperson said that “there were no signs that individuals or groups would come to Museumplein who would bring (improvised) weapons. As a result, there was no reason to designate this area as a security risk area for preventive searches. “The demonstrators did not comply with the corona measures, but that was also no reason for the municipality and the police to intervene.

The demonstrations on the Museumplein seem to be becoming a weekly tradition. A week ago there were about a thousand protesters in the square. The police then intervened after several warnings, including with a water cannon. This also happened regularly in the weeks before.
