Small and Medium-Sized Business Owners Sacrificing Health for Work, According to MMA Corporate Foundation

A Third of Small Business Owners Have Given Up Seeing a Doctor in the Past Year

According to a recent study by the MMA Corporate Foundation, one-third of small and medium-sized business owners have forgone seeing a doctor in the past 12 months. The study, which surveyed VSEs, SMEs, and medium-sized companies, revealed that 31% of business leaders have prioritized their work responsibilities over their health.

While the majority of these business owners claim to be in good physical shape, the demands of their businesses often take precedence. In fact, 12% of respondents admitted to never seeing a doctor at all. Additionally, although 29% of small business leaders maintain regular preventive examinations, this figure is 13 points lower than the national average.

The sacrifices made by these business owners extend beyond their health. Some have even given up the idea of having children in order to avoid the potential disruption to their businesses. Sylvie Bonnello, the general delegate of the MMA foundation, explained that it is not the act of having children that frightens them, but rather the prospect of having to take a six to twelve-month break from their businesses. This sentiment is shared by 19% of business owners under the age of 35, who are willing to forgo having children to prioritize their businesses. Additionally, 13% of respondents admitted to being unable to provide assistance to dependent relatives due to their work commitments.

However, there is a growing desire among these business owners to slow down and prioritize their well-being. Bonnello noted that these business owners have experienced three challenging years and are now seeking a change. Approximately 35% of respondents are planning to take a break from their careers, either to rest and enjoy leisure activities or to pursue a different line of work. Of those planning a career break, 14% aspire to “do nothing” and 18% are considering finding salaried employment.

The study highlights the immense dedication and sacrifices made by small business owners, but also raises concerns about the impact on their health and personal lives. It serves as a reminder of the importance of work-life balance and the need for business owners to prioritize their well-being.Title: One-Third of Small and Medium-Sized Business Owners Sacrifice Healthcare for Work, Reveals MMA Corporate Foundation
