Small aircraft with nine people on board crashed near Örebro in Sweden

A small plane crashed near Örebro airport on Thursday night.

According to the Swedish police several people died.

Swedish TV4 reported earlier tonight that two people have been taken to hospital by ambulance.

– It is described as a total accident, says Lars Hedelin, press spokesperson for the police Expressen.

– It is a very serious and tragic incident, says duty officer Tomas Carlsén at the rescue service to TT.

Nine people on board

The plane must have been a small plane that usually carries parachutists, the Sea and Air Rescue Center informs.

According to press manager Karl-Johan Linde at the Swedish Maritime Administration, there were nine people on board: eight parachutists and one pilot.

– The plane crashed when it was about to take off from the runway, the Swedish Maritime Administration’s press officer informs Expressen.

Local media reports that the plane crashed about 200 meters from the runway.

Rescue crews are now working at the scene of the accident.

Smoke development

Police say they were notified of the accident at 7.20 pm.

Pictures from the airport show a large development of smoke, but according to the rescue service, the fire must now be extinguished.

It is unclear what caused the accident.

Örebro municipality is now establishing a crisis center for people who need support.

On Thursday night, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven wrote a post on Twitter in which he expressed his condolences to those affected and their families.

Expressen writes that the plane was leased in connection with a jumping week, which according to Örebro parachute club’s website takes place between 5 and 9 July.
