The Stade Malherbe Caen avoided the worst by getting his maintenance in League 2, but the news did not become all rosy for all that. In parallel to the reconstruction undertaken on the sporting level, another continues to take place at the headquarters of the Norman SME. More than four months ago, the club initiated a plan to safeguard employment. Relegation to Ligue 2 and the economic context of French football forced it to drastically reduce its expenditure items. At the start of 2021, no less than 158 employees were listed in all of the club’s sectors of activity.
Who are they ? It is on the basis of this question that we sought to know who makes up a club like Stade Malherbe … before the social plan comes into action.
Half of the employees are the players
In addition to a salaried president, a sports director and an administrative director, the Malherbe company (this one, in any case!), Is first and foremost players. They form around half of the workforce, whether they are trainees, aspirants, apprentices or of course professionals. Obviously, they are all on fixed-term contracts so not directly concerned by the social plan.
These players are supervised … by staffs. That of the pros obviously includes the coach, his assistant, the physical trainers, the video analyst, the goalkeeper coach but also the stewards. Of course, young people have their educators, all employees (even at the football school governed by the association and not the company). Each team has a coach and an assistant under contract. There are also physical trainers and goalkeeper coaches. In addition, the women’s section also has employees (four) distributed – as with boys – between the SASP and the association.
But the staff is also medical. That of the pros consists of a doctor, two physiotherapists and an osteopath. On the training center side, four physiotherapists with short-term contracts take turns. There is also a podiatrist, and of course a doctor.
Who says players also says recruitment. The sector has been widely renewed, both among professionals and among young people, in recent times. Our colleague from Foot Normand specified a few months ago that the recruitment unit was from the training center had gone from eight members to… two. Yohan Eudeline oversees the recruitment. Loïc Pérard, Felipe Saad and Frédérik Viseux are the “eyes” of the SMC on the professional side.
Varied professions and sometimes far from football
The relays are to be found on the side of Communication. Stade Malherbe has reduced the sails in recent years in this sector but still has a press officer, a community manager and two videographers.
A little further from the fields, the administrative and commercial part occupies an essential place. The field of action is vast in the purely administrative part. It starts with the switchboard operators and secretaries. We find the administrative and financial department with a financial manager, accountants, a management controller, a human resources manager, a lawyer …
As for the sales representatives, who were four before the start of the social plan, their job essentially consists of finding partners, reserving the best services for them, selling the organization of seminars at the Ornano stadium… Marketing also figures prominently, with event communication managers, ticketing, merchandising, the store to run …
When we get closer to the land, we come across the Ornano stadium operations department and training grounds, with a stadium manager, an assistant and two stadium guards. The club, which took over the operation of the Ornano stadium in 2016, subcontracts the maintenance of the lawns.
Finally, the training center welcomes many and varied positions. The athlete and the medical, already discussed, are only part of it. Extra-football occupies an important place. We thus find an educational coordinator, youth workers, a school referent and his teaching assistant, two night watchmen, a secretary, a linen maid, a dietitian … You simply have to run a boarding school welcoming 36 teenagers and whose coaching is a major asset of the club.
