The Caen have had a good first part of the season, when you know where they come from … (© AC / Sport in Caen)
It is with peace of mind that the players, the staff and probably the leaders of the Stade Malherbe Caen can tackle the first international break of the season. With his ten points on the clock, which earned him sixth place in the Ligue 2 standings, Caen is rather in the high range of expectations that could be formulated for him. No one has forgotten the chaotic last season and its rescue at the last minute …
A little upset workforce
10 points in six games (three wins, one draw and two losses), yet it is one unit less than a year ago. This shows all the caution required at the start of the season. However, it seems obvious that something has changed since the arrival of Stéphane Moulin. A united club is united behind a coach who everyone appreciates the clarity of the speech. The former Angevin has brought order to the Caen game despite a little upset workforce. Only two players have arrived, so far, while major or experienced elements (Beka Beka, Bammou, Pi, Weber…) have left.
Not spared from injury
This Caen team did not need many games to reveal new momentum. But its desire to increase its strength came up against a workforce too quickly penalized by absences. “Without crying, we still had a kind of bad luck that was fierce on the offensive positions, says Stéphane Moulin. I think we had our share of concerns. Kélian Nsona was seriously injured during the preparation, then Caleb Zady Sery, Steve Shamal, Yoël Armougom, Yoann Court, Andréas Hountondji and Ilyès Najim found themselves on the sidelines for a longer or shorter time. Not to mention the suspensions of Zeidane Inoussa and Alexandre Mendy …
An athletic upgrade
If there are things that Stéphane Moulin could not anticipate, others surprised the Caen technician less. “The players achieve athletic performances that are far above from what they did last year volume and intensity, he said after the first three days. When we look a little further than what we were doing, it can cause problems. You have to bring everything up to standard athletically. “However, Caen suffered in the same period of time a significant delay in terms of recruitment which did not make it possible to compensate for the physical hazards.
Caen has it under the sole
In this context, Stéphane Moulin was never able to field the same team, but his bench depth quickly appeared to be problematic. The technician adapted, rather successfully. “I’m happy to have nine points,” he said, had a draw in Nîmes. With all the glitches we had, this is already good news. The Malherbistes, however, reminded Ajaccio, after having already missed their first half against Sochaux a little earlier, that they remained fragile. We can nevertheless imagine that in full, after this first international break, and with the two to three reinforcements expected in this final sprint of the transfer window, the picture will be different.
This start to the season offers a rather encouraging overview of Caen’s possibilities, carried by a striker finally (re) found and a defensive solidity at least accounting (four clean-sheets in six games). What to facilitate the process of reconstruction started under the orders of Stéphane Moulin.
