The big lockdown crisis seems to have been overcome in the economy, however. The managers of 900 companies were asked about the economic situation and mood. The economist Klemens Kurtz from the Chamber of Commerce sees “cautious optimism”. At the end of 2020, the mood was much worse. At that time, more than half of the entrepreneurs still spoke of a bad situation.
“Let people work without additional stress”
In 40 percent of the companies, however, the mood is not yet exhilarating, says Kurtz. And a quarter is urgently looking for staff. Then there are the expensive raw materials and “pre-materials”. The President of the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce, Peter Buchmüller, is convinced that this could certainly slow down the upswing. He demands from politics that the state should not increase its tax burden.
The introduction of additional CO2 taxes would be very damaging to society as a whole, said Buchmüller. Because in addition to the companies, they would also harm the socially disadvantaged. And the companies should now be given enough time and freedom to earn money again. In addition, politicians at all levels – with progressive vaccinations – have to withdraw further restrictions, says WK boss Buchmüller.
