Slovenia’s Chief State Prosecutor Resigns After DUI Incident

Slovenia’s chief state prosecutor Drago Šketa has resigned two days after he was stopped by the police and fined for driving under the influence of alcohol, the Slovenian website “Slovenia Times” reported, cited by BTA.

Shketa admitted the offense and apologized. He told reporters yesterday that he was driving home from a private party on Saturday night when he was stopped by police near Maribor and tested for alcohol.

The legal alcohol limit for driving in Slovenia is up to 0.24 milligrams of alcohol per liter of breath. Shketa specified that his drug test showed 0.37 milligrams. He notified the Minister of Justice about the situation already on Saturday, and on Monday morning he submitted his resignation to the State Prosecutor’s Council, the Speaker of the Parliament and the Minister of Justice. Shketa said he offered his resignation because he has always held high morale among civil servants.

I submitted my resignation because I believe that my actions could harm the good name of the prosecution and state prosecutors, he said. Šketa, who has spent most of his career in the prosecutor’s office, has been Slovenia’s chief prosecutor since 2017 and began a new six-year term in May. He was the only candidate for the position. The Chief Prosecutor of Slovenia is appointed by the Parliament for a term of 6 years on the proposal of the State Prosecutor’s Council after the opinion of the Government.
