Josip Broz Tito is still inevitable in the former Yugoslavia. In all the countries that emerged from the collapsed state in 1991, the ruler has left his mark. To date, Tito’s biographers do not agree on how many residences the autocratic ruler had at his disposal. There were certainly dozens of them: old palaces, newly built villas and with Brijuni an entire private group of islands.
Even in New York adequate accommodation was always available for the “non-aligned” man, who worked skillfully between East and West. When in town, Tito stayed in a luxurious Fifth Avenue mansion built around 1905 with lots of gold and marble. After his death in 1980, Yugoslavia’s successor states inherited the 20,000-square-foot, 32-room building, which has bulletproof glass windows on the side facing Central Park.
The ownership structure made the sale, which was finally agreed upon, difficult. An involved New York luxury real estate agent has had to fly to Europe five times over the years to negotiate with government officials from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia. On the market he praised the villa as a “jewel” with a rare extra: a “secret room” is built like a Faraday cage and is therefore absolutely insect-proof.
It is not known whether the buyer has therefore hit. Just so much: the mansion has now changed hands for $ 50 million. It is now owned by a London businessman who wishes to remain anonymous. The proceeds from the sales will be divided among the successor states of Yugoslavia. According to the media, Slovenia can expect a share of 7.5 million euros.
