A family of three and their two guides found themselves trapped by waters suddenly rising in a cave in Slovenia after heavy rains, emergency services said on Sunday.

They left on Saturday morning to explore the tourist site of Krizna, some 50 km south of the capital Ljubljana, before finding themselves stuck.

Not seeing them return at the expected time, a team of divers went looking for them in the evening and was able to locate them about 2 km from the entrance to this 8 km long cave.

The five adults, sheltering in a dry shelter, are in good shape, rescuers told the press, who were able to provide them with a tent, warm clothes, food and medicine after a three-hour journey.

Emergency services are being organized on site.

“It will be possible to evacuate them quickly as soon as the water level drops,” said team leader Walter Zakrajsek, without being able to say more at this stage.

If the situation were to continue, rescuers plan to provide them with what they need every 12 hours.

The Krizna Cave, whose 22 emerald-colored underground lakes can be visited aboard a small boat, is one of the main tourist attractions in Slovenia.

More than 14,000 caves have been mapped in this Central European country, although small in size – 20,300 square kilometers – but whose depths constitute an exceptional network of galleries and buried rooms.
