Slovenia and Germany top in Paris-Roubaix for juniors and promises, 2 Belgians on the podium

Seventeen-year-old Axel Van Den Broek was part of the long flight in Paris-Roubaix for juniors, a race for the Nations Cup. He was joined by several pursuers deep into the final, including world champion Albert Withen Philipsen.

In the sprint of the leading group on the Roubaix cycling track, Philipsen took the lead too early. The Dane only finished fourth. The Slovenians took full advantage: Jakob Omrzel was the best, Erazem Valjavec finished second.

For the juniors (riders under 19 years old), Paris-Roubaix was 111 kilometers and 17 cobblestone sections. In the past, the competition was won by, among others, Jasper Stuyven (2010), the Dane Mads Pedersen (2013) and the British Tom Pidcock (2017).

German Teutenberg succeeds the late De Decker with promises

The German Tim Torn Teutenberg of the Lidl-Trek training team succeeded the late Tijl De Decker on Sunday as the winner of Paris-Roubaix for promising riders. The Belgian Robin Orins – former teammate of De Decker – came in an emotional third.

Teutenberg and Orins rode away from a large leading group in the final phase together with the British Robert Donaldson. In the sprint on the Roubaix cycling track, track specialist Teutenberg won ahead of Donaldson and Orins.

Orins was overcome with emotions afterwards: the West Flemish was De Decker’s teammate in Paris-Roubaix for promises last year. Then De Decker won solo and Orins also finished third. Orins still rides for the Lotto Dstny training team.

Paris-Roubaix for promises (riders under 23 years old) was 163 kilometers long and contained 25 cobblestone sections. In addition to De Decker, the list of achievements also includes the British Tom Pidcock (2019) and the Italian Filippo Ganna (2016).
