BRATISLAVA – The footballers of Slovan Bratislava entered the group stage of the European Conference League with a 2:1 victory over the Faroese champion KÍ Klaksvík. The winning goal was scored by Aleksandar Čavrič in the 74th minute, and his team thus figures in the A-group table in second place behind OSC Lille. The Slovak champion will next appear in the EKL on October 5 at Olimpija Ljubljana.
The home team entered the match better, they kept the ball on their feet and tried to combine offensive action. Initially, Captain Weiss was the initiator, after a while Slovan tried it on the wings as well. That’s how Strelec got into a promising position, who had a half-open goal after a back pass from Čavrič. However, his attempt was blocked by stopper Forren for a corner kick.

“Belasí” guarded the guests’ slight attempts to break even with the help of goalkeeper Borjan and continued to try to combine themselves. Blackman received an exhibition pass for the defense, but goalkeeper Johansson ran out and destroyed the chance.
Klaksvík started attacking a bit more actively, but his opponent continued to control the game. The home side’s next chance came after Blackman’s cross into the penalty area, which Čavrič headed just over the crossbar.

A few minutes later, Tolič sent a back pass to the Serbian gunner from the edge of the small area, but the shot attempt was blocked by the defense of the guests. After half an hour of the meeting, the game was also played in Slovan’s half, but the guests did not create a significant chance.
Slovan tried to score a quick goal after the break, but Čavrič sent Blackman’s cross high again. On the contrary, the visitors benefited from the first shot on goal, from a corner kick he sent the ball sharply to the far post of Frederiksberg and Pavlović scored from close range.
However, the guests were in the lead for only five minutes – Čavrič started Slovan’s offensive action, who found Weiss right in front of the goal and the team captain equalized the score from the first.
After an hour of the game, home team Tolič sent a promising sharp shot from outside the box and two minutes later he was able to score from a break. Strelec sent him to escape, but the Croat got the short end of the stick in a physical fight.
That’s when coach Weiss made a substitution and revived the offensive trio with Barseghjan. He sent a long-range cross to the far post after eight minutes on the field, Petersen did not cover Čavrič and he sent his team into the lead with a header. The goal was valid even after investigation by the VAR system for possible offside.
On the opposite side, it was Petersen who got a huge chance, he finished first from the edge of the small goal, but Borjan pulled off an elite save. At the very end, however, the ball fell far from the goal and the guests had a great chance to equalize. However, the defense replaced Borjan and Klaksvík did not get anything from the subsequent corner kick.
