BRATISLAVA. On Thursday evening, the Slovak national football team qualified for next year’s European Championships. At the same time, in March, after the home goalless draw with Luxembourg, the word embarrassment was used.
How was Slovakia’s progress born?
March 23, 2023, Trnava: Slovakia – Luxembourg 0:0
The first match of the EURO 2024 qualification against Luxembourg was the fifth meeting of Francesco Calzona on the bench of the Slovak national team. The Italian coach recorded one loss and three draws in the first four matches, and everyone automatically expected a win against Luxembourg.
It didn’t happen. Roughly 3,500 people in Trnava’s City Arena did not see the goal. The debutant Róbert Polievka had the best chance, who headed in an ideal position only to the goalkeeper. After the match, the spectators in the stadium whistled and those in front of the television screens just shook their heads in incomprehension at the words of Calzona’s coach, who said he was satisfied.
Calzon’s statement was immediately criticized by former representatives Ján Mucha and Martin Škrtel. Skrtel wrote on the social network that he hopes the interpreter mistranslated the coach’s statement.
When the Italian coach was confronted with their views in the press, he declared: “Then that means I don’t understand football.”
