Slovakia’s New Prime Minister Halts Military Assistance to Ukraine and Opposes Further Sanctions on Russia

(AFP, Bratislava, 26th) Slovakia’s new Prime Minister Robert Fico said today that the Slovak government will stop providing further military assistance to Ukraine and will not support further sanctions on Russia.

Fico told lawmakers that Slovakia would “no longer provide weapons to Ukraine,” reiterating a promise he made during the campaign but would still provide humanitarian aid to war-torn Ukraine.

He also said: “I will support zero military aid to Ukraine… The best solution we can offer Ukraine is to immediately stop military operations. The EU should transform from a weapons supplier to a peacemaker.”

Fico, who will attend an EU summit in Brussels today, also expressed his opposition to sanctions on Russia. “I will not vote for any sanctions against Russia until we see an analysis of the impact on Slovakia,” he said.

“If, like most sanctions, this one is going to hurt us, I don’t see any reason to support such a move.”
