HALMSTAD – The Slovakian under-20 hockey players were not enough in the first preparatory meeting before the world championship against their peers from Finland and lost 1:5 to them.

The Slovaks started with a good first rotation, but they gradually lost their pace with the Finns. The first period was characterized as goalless, mainly thanks to the excellent Urban. In the second half, four goals were scored, three of them into our net, and the result was practically decided. In the end, Suomi added two more goals and our team’s defeat was obvious. The only Slovakian goal was scored in the 27th minute by defender Nátne Alex Šotek.

“We need to quickly get back down to earth, start completely from the ground up. In the dressing room after the match, I said words to the players that maybe many didn’t like, but the truth had to be told. It was only a warm-up match that showed us what we have to work on.” said Ivan Feneš, the disappointed coach of the 20s, for Hockey Slovakia after the match.

Suomi benefited especially from the great work in the area in front of the goal and showed our selection a really hard lesson, from which the players will have to learn as soon as possible. “There was an enormous amount of outnumbering towards our goal and we had bad solutions in front of our goal. We got four goals from there. We have to tighten up and improve our game there.” Fenes added.

Before the championship, there is talk mainly about the great offensive power of our team. However, they had virtually no chance against the well-organized Finns yesterday, and the head coach is aware of this: “We totally failed in personal battles and we absolutely did not push forward.”

The Slovaks entered the meeting without goalkeeper Adam Gajan, defender Marián Mošek, as well as forwards Dalibor Dvorský, Alex Čiernik, Martin Mišiak and Adam Sýkora. “Yes, our offensive was not complete yet, but I believe that it will show itself in full in the match against Germany.” added Feneš with the fact that fast striker Adam Sýkora, who should be among the leaders of our selection, has already joined the team.

The Finns set up a mirror for us

In the match against Finland, both goalkeepers, Samuel Urban and Patrik Elias, got a chance. The pair of young goalkeepers had to deal with a lot of opportunities, as many as 39 Finns’ shots were directed at our goal.

“Today’s match set a big mirror for us. However, it was still a preparatory match, which showed us many bad things that we have to work on before the start of the championship. Even such a lesson is good for us.” goalkeeper Samuel Urban evaluated the match. He caught the first half of the meeting.

The chance to make amends will come already on Friday, December 22, from 7:30 p.m., when our representatives will play in the second preparatory meeting against Germany.
