Slovak Sensation: Leo Sauer Lights Up Dutch Soccer Scene
Eighteen-year-old Slovakian midfielder Leo Sauer is making waves in the Dutch Eredivisie, dazzling fans with his skills and scoring talent.
Playing for NAC Breda on loan from Feyenoord, Sauer has emerged as a crucial player, bagging his third goal of the season against Almere City in a match-winning performance. His celebration, inspired by his favorite video game, Call of Duty, drew applause and laughter from fans.
“Yesterday I was playing with PlayStation mates and we were talking about a way to celebrate. That’s how I did it,” Sauer laughed.
Sauer’s journey has been one of determination and resilience. After a stint with the Slovakian national team at the European Championship in Germany, he returned to Feyenoord hoping for more playing time. When opportunities proved limited, he embraced the loan move to Breda, a decision that has paid dividends.
"I don’t want to say I was surprised, but I was a little disappointed. But it belongs to football," Sauer admitted.
In Breda, Sauer has found a welcoming environment and a coach who believes in his potential.
“He wants to develop as a player who can reach the top,” NAC Breda coach Carl Hoefkens told ESPN. “As soon as you want to climb up there, you can’t avoid defensive operations. He never does that. He is always willing to work hard for the team.”
Sauer’s talent hasn’t gone unnoticed. Recently, he became the youngest player in NAC Breda’s history to score two goals in consecutive league matches.
“I didn’t know about this statistic, but maybe the best idea is to bring in another player called Leo in the winter,” coach Hoefkens joked after Sauer’s latest heroic performance.
Sauer’s skill on the field is matched only by his humility off it.
"I’m a quiet boy, so getting to know other people is important to me," Sauer said.
His dedication and talent solidify Sauer’s position as one of Europe’s most promising young players, certain to attract attention from bigger clubs in the future

Sauer’s recent success includes an impressive solo goal against Almere City, showcasing his ability to weave through defenders and finish with precision.
"He asked for the ball on the left, threw it past the defender on his stronger right foot and finished completely at the far post," a sports analyst noted.
