OSTRAVA Slovakia delivered a big blow against the star-studded United States.
Spurred on by the ferocious Slovakian fans who filled the arena, it was a 5-4 victory after extra time.
Among the heroes was scandal-hit player Libor Hudacek, who was kicked out of the SHL.
Slovakia led 4-1 in the third period and came away with their breath on their necks after three American turnovers in which they took the game to overtime.
The hero with 1.04 left in overtime was two-goal player Milos Kelemen.
The USA now has two losses in its first three games in Group B at the World Cup in the Czech Republic.
After the first loss against Tre Kronor, there was now another loss against Slovakia.
In advance, Tre Kronor and the USA, with the most star-studded teams, were the two favorites for WC gold.
SHL profiles in focus
The Slovakian team is led by a great series with NHL star Juraj Slafkovsky and Leksand profiles Marek Hrivik and Peter Cehlarik.
– It was a wonderful game. We finished badly but we continued to play, the most important thing was that we won. Every victory is important, but the fact that it was against the US makes it even better, says superstar Juraj Slafkovsky.
What happened in the third period when you lost such a big lead?
– There were mistakes, but I don’t care. We won the game.
Supporters in the usually sold-out arena included Slovakian legend Marian Hossa.
Former SHL player Libor Hudacek is now up to three goals in three games, it was in 2018 that he was expelled from Färjestad after five games because of an ugly slash at Ludvig Elvenes in Rögle.
American game trick
Slovakia won the duels and the frustrated United States lost their composure, the Brady Tkatchuk problem started to roll around already when it was time to fall.
In the United States, goalkeeper Alex Lyon has to go home after a skate over his hand in the second game against Germany.
Now Alex Nedeljkovic was replaced by Trey Augustine after four goals that were not entirely unbelievable.
Tre Kronor will face Slovakia in the final group stage game on Tuesday next week.
