Slovakia stops use of Russian “Sputnik V” vaccine

“In total, more than 18,500 people have been vaccinated with Sputnik V,” said Zuzana Eliasova, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Health.

Slovakia purchased a 200,000 dose of Sputnik V in March, becoming the second European Union (EU) country after Hungary to opt for a Russian product that had not been approved by the European Medicines Agency.

The acquisition of Sputnik V provoked a strong political backlash and demand for it was low.

In the four-party coalition, three of its members opposed the acquisition, which eventually led to the resignation of Prime Minister Igor Matovič and Health Minister Marek Krajči.

On April 1, a government was formed under Eduard Heger.

Russia repurchased 160,000 unused doses in July.

In a Central European country with a population of 5.4 million, a total of 394,923 cases of Covid-19 have been reported since the beginning of the pandemic, and 12,548 have died.
