Slovakia Sends Fighter Jets to Ukraine, Becoming Second Country to Join the Conflict

The Slovak government is going to send MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine. Prime Minister Eduard Heger announced this on Friday. Poland announced on Thursday that it wants to send fighter jets to Ukraine.

These are MiG-29 fighter jets that Ukrainian troops are already using. This is useful because soldiers do not need extra training.

Slovakia wants to send eleven fighter jets. Most need to be patched up before they can be used.

Military support to Kyiv is greatly increased with the deliveries. Until now, supplying fighter jets has been a taboo for Kyiv’s western allies, fearing further escalation of the conflict with Russia. In addition to a number of aircraft, Slovakia is also sending spare parts and part of the KUB air defense system, Heger reports.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has thanked the Slovak Prime Minister in a telephone conversation. “I appreciate his personal role in supporting Ukraine,” Zelensky tweeted. The Kremlin said the arrival of fighter jets “will make no difference to the course of the war”.
